BASE is the rider’s tool for elongating the horse’s back and engaging the thoracic sling. It’s what you call on when you need the horse to get bigger, prouder, more through — whether you’re unlocking a flashier trot, preparing the second trot, or simply ensuring that every stride strengthens rather than stresses the body.

B = Back elongated

The topline must lengthen so the back swings. Without this you only ever create pictures, not posture.

A = Abs + sling engaged

The abdominal muscles and thoracic sling come into play, lifting the ribcage and withers. This shortens the wheelbase and keeps weight even in all four feet.

S = Shoulders upright

The shoulders must stay in front of the hips, never dropping in or out. Upright shoulders are the anchor that makes the topline usable.

E = Energy recycled

When the loop is unbroken — hind legs stepping under, topline free, withers lifted — energy cycles through the body and back to the rider’s hand. This is throughness: the horse carries you.

Why It Matters

BASE is the medicine point. Each stride built on BASE strengthens the horse’s core and sling, protects the forelimbs, and develops longevity. Without BASE, you can decorate outlines but not sustain performance. With BASE, you create the body that can truly carry.
